I’m inspired by my teachers and parents who taught me to challenge myself and strive to make an impact in whatever I do.

I believe learning languages is important, and I enjoyed exploring the French language and culture. The classes were a great break from my maths and science-heavy subjects, and our amazing teacher even brought pastries!

I’m inspired by my family who are strong and passionate role models. Through their teachings and efforts in advancing Indigenous rights, they’ve inspired the same passion and sense of purpose in me.
Career goal
To bring meaningful change to the legal system, particularly regarding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander rights. As a proud Dunghutti, Gungalu and Birri Gubba woman, I want to represent my community and make an impact.

Legal Studies and French. I had amazing teachers and classes. In Legal Studies, I found the content really interesting. And I loved learning French and seeing my progress over the years.
Tips and advice for current Year 12 students
Accept that you can’t do everything or say yes to everything. Some days you might not be as productive as you’d like, and that’s completely okay and healthy.
Zara Kerin-Bird
Sunshine Coast Grammar School (Forest Glen)

I’m inspired by my close friends and family who share my curiosity for the world and who change the way I think about different topics and can engage in endless hours of conversation.
Career goal

Extension English was a very independently driven course with lots of academic and philosophical concepts. It always challenged my abilities and broadened my knowledge of literature and thought.
Tips and advice for current Year 12 students
Balance your study with your wellbeing and choose your subjects with caution but not fear. Make sure that you have enough interest in a subject to study it for the whole of senior schooling.

Brisbane Grammar School (Brisbane)

My grandad is my biggest inspiration. His journey as a swimming coach — from working with Olympic medallists to hosting clinics in disadvantaged countries — taught me the value of finding happiness, following your passion and being generous to those around you.
Career goal
To graduate from medical school and complete a specialty program, with a particular interest in surgery. I’m excited by the thrill and focus it requires and I’m eager to see where my journey in medicine will take me.

A Bachelor of Science at The University of Queensland, with an extended major in biomedical science and a minor in computer science, before transitioning into the Doctor of Medicine program.

Specialist Mathematics. It provided a unique challenge with every problem being new and solvable in multiple ways. Solving them was extremely satisfying.

Manage your time effectively. Focus hard in class instead of chatting with your mates — this small change can help you maximise your potential.

I’m inspired by my parents who work in the health sector. Seeing their hard work to better the community and their impact on patients motivates me.

Trust the preparation you’ve done before an exam. Don’t revise last minute — it won’t be productive.

Specialist Mathematics. I really enjoyed the challenge of learning the content while improving my problem-solving skills, and therefore study rarely felt like work — rather it was something I'd look forward to doing.

Share your skills with others as often as you can. Not only does it feel good to be able to help other people, but in doing so, you further your own competence in those skills.

Dinesh Palipana, a quadriplegic doctor and lawyer, inspires me with his resilience and advocacy for medical students with disabilities. This encouraged me to pursue a career dedicated to serving others.

To work with some of the greatest minds in the country, both in hospitals and research, and help women in vulnerable positions receive culturally appropriate healthcare and improve patient outcomes in underserved communities.

Start your assignments and exam study early and use class time wisely. Also, don’t give up on your extracurriculars — students who are involved in activities often manage their time better and perform well.

My inspiration to pursue medicine arose during the COVID-19 pandemic when I saw the positive impact health workers had on our community. I will strive to make a similar impact in my career.

Specialist Mathematics gave me the opportunity to think creatively. I’ve always enjoyed creative problem-solving in maths.
Tips and advice for current Year 12 students
Ask lots of questions — not just about the content but also about exams: how they’re written and marked and how the ISMGs are interpreted. Putting myself in my teachers’ shoes helped me get better at guessing questions and evaluating my work.
Andrew Xiao-Tang

My inspiration is rooted in my religious commitment. My only goal in life is to glorify God in whatever I do.
Career goal
To pursue a career in the engineering or medical industry. I also hope to contribute to innovation by founding an organisation with my colleagues.

Find your purpose, let go of things you can’t control, surround yourself with friends who build you up and learn from everyone you meet.

I realised that I would like nothing more than to teach mathematics to motivated students, hence my desire for a role in teaching at a university.

Maintain balance. I benefited greatly from having projects and creative hobbies alongside studying — sometimes it’s not procrastinating, it’s a well-needed break.

Stay curious and never be afraid to ask questions. The more you explore, the more you grow. It’s alright to make mistakes — they’re part of the journey.
