Amendments have been made to the English as an Additional Language General Senior Syllabus 2019.
Text selection
The text selection guidance for Units 1 and 2 has been clarified to state that students must study one complete play and one complete prose text as part of the school-based selection of three texts from the categories indicated.
Unit objectives
Unit 1 objective 1 has been amended. It no longer specifies particular genres as a focus for the unit. Assessment decisions are school-based across Units 1 and 2.
Unit 2 objectives 1, 4 and 11 have been amended. They no longer specify particular genres as a focus for the unit. Assessment decisions are school-based across Units 1 and 2.
Summative internal assessment 1 (IA1): Examination — analytical written response
The specifications have been clarified to acknowledge that students may be responding to a question or a task.
The conditions have been clarified to state that students may bring in 200 words of quotations from the studied text/s, signed by the teacher, rather than a clean copy of the text.
The instrument-specific marking guide has been amended to include an additional characteristic in the 1-mark performance level descriptor. This change has been made for each of the three criteria.
Summative internal assessment 2 (IA2): Extended response — persuasive written response
The instrument-specific marking guide has been amended to include an additional characteristic in the 1-mark performance level descriptor. This change has been made for each of the three criteria.
Summative internal assessment 3 (IA3): Extended response — imaginative spoken/multimodal response
The order of the characteristics for the Knowledge application criterion has been changed in the instrument-specific marking guide to reflect the order of the assessment objectives.

Summative external assessment (EA): Examination — analytical extended response
Assessment objectives 1 and 6 have been clarified to include responsiveness to the unseen question or task as part of the objectives.
Subject matter
Unit 4 Topic 2: Critical responses to literary texts has been amended to better define the subject matter in ‘Text in contexts’, ‘Language and textual analysis’ and ‘Responding to and creating texts’.
