Kindergarten transition statements

Transition statements are written from a strengths-based perspective. They provide a point-in-time summary of each child’s knowledge, skills, and dispositions for learning across the five learning and development areas in the Queensland Kindergarten Learning Guideline (QKLG).

This page provides advice and resources to support teachers and services to create kindergarten transition statements. The QKLG provides more information on supporting transitions and continuity of learning.

Kindergarten services create transition statements in the Kindergarten Transition Statement application (KTS app) in the QCAA Portal.

The app supports:

  • the provision of consistent information about children’s learning to parents/carers and schools
  • ease of use and efficiency for kindergarten teachers.

Managing transition statements

The steps for creating transition statements are outlined below.

In accordance with Queensland's privacy laws, parents/carers must complete Transition statement consent form 1  before kindergartens can enter a child's personal details into the KTS app. Kindergarten services should retain a copy of the consent form with the transition statement for three years after the child has exited the service.

Consent to create a transition statement is only required when using the KTS app. If consent has not been obtained, use the Queensland kindergarten transition statement template.

To access the KTS app, kindergarten services must nominate access administrators by completing the following form.

Kindergarten teachers use the KTS app to create transition statements from a strengths-based perspective that:

  • describe children's learning and development
  • identify strategies to support children’s continuity of learning and their transition to school.

The following advice and examples support teachers and educators to create transition statements:

Kindergartens provide parents/carers a copy of their child's completed transition statement.

Transition statements help families to:

  • understand their child’s learning, strengths and interests
  • share information with the school to support transition and continuity of learning for their child.

After reading their child’s transition statement, parents/carers may give permission for the transition statement to be shared with their child’s Prep Year teacher and/or other relevant staff by signing Transition statement consent form 2.

Before providing informed consent to share, parents/carers may:

  • make suggestions for continuity of learning
  • request any incorrect personal information is amended.

Kindergarten services should retain a copy of the consent form with the transition statement for three years after the child has exited the service.
